History of Lighting

Peterkin Electric has been in business for 25 years and in just that time there have been so many advances in lighting. But the entire fascination with electricity and lighting started long before that! Artificial lighting actually began its development tens of thousands of years ago and to this day continues to refine and improve. Archaeologists have documented lighting back about 70,000 years ago, where the first artificial lighting was from a hollowed out rock filled with dried wood chips and sprinkled with animal fat, then ignited! With new discoveries such as pottery and alabaster, and adding a wick the burn was controlled. In the 7th century BC, the Greeks began using terra cotta lamps that would replace handheld torches. ‘Lamp’ is derived from the Greek word ‘lampas’ which means torch. This remained the primary means of artificial lighting for centuries.

In 1801, Sir Humphrey Davy demonstrated the first electric lamp: the ‘Carbon Arc Lamp’. It was not until the development of the incandescent lamp, developed by Thomas Edison in the U.S., and Sir Joseph Swan in England. Mr. Edison patented his invention in 1880, and from there it became the success that it is today, continuing to make lighting better. Since the start of the 20th century, lighting has become an ongoing challenge to make lighting brighter, more efficient and more exciting. Lighting is used in just about every aspect of our lives. With multilevel buildings and complex architecture it is not reasonable to expect that the sun alone can provide all our lighting needs, even in the daylight hours. Thanks to the amazing advances in technology there are so many options available, with many of the newest advances in power efficient lighting for homes and businesses. Since the 1960’s the advances in lighting have been a whirlwind, starting with the development of the red LED light. It was not until 1994 that sulfur lamps were used commercially! 2009 started the phasing out of the incandescent light bulbs bringing us to the best and the brightest lighting trends by designing the lighting that works with your vision!

As a result of all the advancements in technology, there are countless ways to personalize any lighting project, from the single home to the most elaborate lighting set up in concerts and showrooms.
