When you are ready to start upgrades to your home there are lots of options that you can look into. You can of course have a space or an area renovated and remodeled all together. You can also decide that a change of paint color will bring the impact that you need. Lastly you can look at switching out some fixtures and hardware around the house. When it comes to fixtures that you may want to have changed out the electrical and lights are a great place to start. There are some light fixtures you can change and that will change the metal, color or finish which can give the room a different look. You want to make sure if you are going to have some light fixtures replaced you know what to do. Peterkin Electric outlines the steps that need to be followed to replace a light fixture.
Turn Off Power Supply
The first and most important part of replacing a light fixture is to make sure that the power supply is turned off. When you start to work with any electrical outlet or wiring you want to make sure that it is not hot. Hot means that there is electricity that is being sent to that area. You do not want to work on any electrical area that is hot and that is why finding and shutting off the power supply is necessary. The power can be shutoff at the breaker box or the circuit. This is the only way to ensure that the person doing the work will not be electrocuted.
Remove Existing Light Fixture
Once you are confident that the power supply has been shut off you can start working on the fixtures. You will need to remove the fixture that is in place and take it down. There are usually some secure tabs, screws or nails that are keeping it in place. You need to locate them and pull down the fixture with ease because it will also have electrical wires attached to it as well. You want to be careful when removing these wires so that you know which each wire is and where they belong. Once you have removed the wires you can pull the fixture off.
Install the New Lighting Fixture
Now that you have the old fixture out of place you can start to find a way to replace it with the new one. You want to make sure that the fixture fits well in the space and that the wires will all match up. The new light needs to be wired with the wires that are already in the wall and be sure that the connections are secure. If you leave any loose connections they can be a fire hazard and should be addressed.
